Acting for Healthcare Professionals- An Update

This session looks at updating the accountant’s knowledge on Doctors and Dentists. People can fall into the trap of thinking that dealing with the above two professions is the same. Whilst there are similarities, this is fundamentally wrong – there are many differences, and these can have considerable effects on the advice required. However, dealing with these professionals can be very rewarding. In this rapidly changing and increasingly competitive niche market, it is essential that accountants are aware of the most recent developments.

The course is aimed at helping accountants to assist their clients in responding to the changes on both strategic and detailed levels.

The course will be of use to accountants already acting for this type of client, who have at least a basic knowledge of the subject, and are looking for a technical update and refresher. It will also be suitable for those who would like an understanding of the problems encountered by this part of the health care sector.

  • A recap on the Health Professional & the NHS – the changing relationship between the GP or the dentist and the NHS must be considered. Indeed, as the sector is under immense pressure, the Government will be injecting new money into the sector with new NHS contracts/provisions – these will be analysed
  • However, the course will cover what is also topical including:
    • Contract changes and consequences including PCNs
    • What structures can be awarded NHS contracts and which cannot
    • Successions and sales – the rules
    • Goodwill implications arising from this
    • Superannuation and pensions – including the interaction between superannuation and taxation
    • Partnership deeds – the main specialist financial clauses – what is needed
    • Associates/performers/salaried positions
  • Where are we with incorporation and other structures such as federations etc?
  • Specific operational tax problems – IR35, intermediaries, status, MTD, VAT, personal expenses & HMRC
  • Surgeries – capital gains and capital allowances
  • Stop press – the most recent developments in the sector

The course will look at the two professions on a compare and contrast basis and will not be split 1½ hours on Doctors followed by 1½ hours on Dentists.
